Tried & Tested: CRJ 900 Regional Jet

Tried & Tested CRJ 900 Jet

The Bombardier CRJ 900 is a regional jet, renowned for its efficiency, reliability, and versatility for smaller group travel.

A regional jet is a compact, twin-engine aircraft built for short to medium-haul routes, usually carrying fewer than 100 passengers and typically connecting smaller cities to major airports or destinations. It sits perfectly between smaller private jets and larger commercial aircraft. Operated by regional carriers or subsidiaries of major airlines, they play a vital role in aircraft charter.

The Bombardier CRJ 900 entered production in 2001 and replaced the earlier and smaller CRJ 700.

Why we like the CRJ 900

Matt Feldon, Head of Charter, said: “The CRJ 900 is a regular choice for our sports charters, offering just the right capacity to accommodate the team and staff comfortably. It also works perfectly for smaller MICE groups, combining efficiency with a smooth and dependable travel experience. For a regional aircraft, it has a good range, enabling us to fly groups further, and the 2-2 configuration makes it different to other jets with an offset aisle.”

Let’s look at the specifications:

  • Powered by twin GE CF34-8C5 turbofan engines, delivering a consistently high level of performance even in challenging conditions such as hot climates and high-altitude take-offs.
  • These engines help the aircraft reach a cruise speed of around 515 mph and a maximum operating altitude of around 41,000 feet.
  • The overall length of the plane is 36.2m, and it is 7.5m tall. The wingspan is 24.9m.
  • The height inside the cabin is 1.89 m, with a width of 2.55m
  • The CRJ 900 can fly non-stop for routes of up to 1,350 nautical miles (1,553 miles / 2,500 km)

On board the CRJ 900

The CRJ 900 cabin offers a comfortable and practical travel experience.

Designed to carry up to 90 passengers in a single-class cabin, typically arranged in a 2-2 seating formation; a single aisle with 2 seats on either side, every passenger enjoys either a window or aisle seat.

The rear-mounted engines keep the cabin quieter, while the simple, effective design makes boarding and moving around easy. A healthier cabin environment is achieved by supplying 100% fresh air, continuously replacing used air with clean air drawn directly from outside the aircraft. Overhead bins provide space for small carry-on bags.

Reasons to charter the CRJ 900

As with other regional jets, the CRJ 900 is ideal for small groups looking for a whole aircraft charter. We frequently charter this type of aircraft on behalf of our clients for a range of reasons: staff movements, MICE travel, press trips, weddings, specialist tour operations, educational group travel, sports travel and more.

  • Sports travel: The CRJ 900 is ideal for sports charters, most often team travel or small groups of fans or sponsors travelling to fixtures, and is typically chartered for regional or short-haul journeys of around one to two hours, striking the balance between comfort, privacy and functionality.
  • MICE group travel: With seating for up to 90 passengers, the CRJ 900 creates an exclusive environment for smaller corporate and incentive travel groups, enabling the event experience to start the moment passengers step on board.
  • Press trips: When creating a good first impression counts, the CRJ is a good option for press trips, offering an opportunity for branding and experiential elements at the start of the journey. It’s a popular option for our automotive clients when hosting press for new car launches.
